Safety Tips
Teach your childern Well!

By Esther Horn

How to show proper behavior and respect for animals….

Always ask your parents permission first to see if you can pet a calm dog that is sitting.

Never approach a strange dog without asking the owner's permission. If it is okay, approach slowly and quietly. Let the dog sniff your fist first, then if he stays calm, pet the dog on the side of his neck.

Never pet a dog that is sleeping, eating, or chewing on a bone or toy.

Never pet a dog in a car or behind a fence, it may try to protect its territory.

Never run if a strange dog approaches. Dogs are excited and stimulated by movement and will chase anyone who runs. Children should stand still, with their hands tight to their sides and do not look at the dogs face.

Teach children to "be a tree." Trees are boring and most dogs will eventually go away. If you are on the ground, be a rock. Roll into a ball facing down and cover the back of your neck with your hands.

Teaching these respectful rules will help keep your children safe.
