Destined to die nameless, Rescued by PPF By Ruth Rosen
Amy, a three year old spayed Jack Russell Terrier with a wonderful disposition, was on death row at the Orange County Shelter. Why was she there? She had severe glaucoma and probably dumped there by her previous owner rather than attend to her medical needs. The Orange County Shelter's policy was no surgery; Amy was destined to be euthanized. A volunteer from Pet Project Foundation was visiting the shelter to get third chance dogs. She saw this little dog behind layers of hurricane fencing, wagging her tail, even though her eyes were bulging out from the pressure of glaucoma causing severe pain. For the first time, this shelter acquiesced to the pleas from a Good Samaritan, and the PPF volunteer. Amy would have her eyes removed with the condition she be taken to another shelter. Following surgery, under the auspices of Pet Project Foundation, Amy, still with stitches where her eyes had been removed, was transported to the Pro-humane San Clemente - Dana Point Shelter. Everyone knew she would make a wonderful pet for someone who has the patience and love to help her adjust to a new home environment. Amy deserved a second chance at life, not to be abandon because she cannot see. Natural to her breed she is bright and alert. She would adapt to a new home environment quickly.
Once Amy's picture and a brief statement about her circulated
via the internet, PPF received a call from San Diego, a woman
with two Jack Russell Terriers was looking to adopt another
Jack with special needs. Within days of being moved to the
San Clemente - Dana Point Animal Shelter, Amy was adopted!
She is now in a new loving home with two buddies .
Amy is one of several dogs rescued from other shelters under a third chance program , recently adopted by PPF and the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter. These dogs destined to be euthanized, are selected by disposition and adoptability. Once brought to their new home, they don't stay long, quickly getting adopted.
